This is under heavy construction just now.
Possible Problems:
- slow graphics (means it starts `skipping'):
- Switch on `PacketLossMeter'
and `PacketDropMeter'. They show you, if packets
dont reach you (`loss'), or if the client discards
frames (`dropping') as the Xserver is too slow to draw them.
If you are `dropping', then:
- Use the toggle '0' (zero) to switch off servermessages.
That saves a lot of complicated character drawing.
(Menu->Config).
- Stay with 8bit colordepth on Linux, higher ones usually slow
down things unacceptable.
- Try the options `-erase' or `-colorswitch no'
(the latter especially for Sun's TCX cards)
`-erase' is a commandline option since 4.1.0. Contact me, if
you want a patch for earlier versions.
- Your client hangs and your pointer is lost (if you play with mouse):
Type `m' to get the pointer back.
One should build an `xlock' with this!
- Sudden turning of the ship if you play with mouse:
Type `a' or 's' once. A `keyPress' event was noticed without the
according `keyRelease' ...
- Your turnspeed and power settings are suddenly messed up.
This is known as the `turnspeedbug'. Actually there is no
real fix yet. Either adjust your settings by hand or simply restart
your client.
- Sudden switching of the weapon modifiers when restarting from the base,
especially `N'. No fix yet.
Some Tips:
- Play with mouse. Though you certainly
need a little time to learn steering again.
It pays off.
- Use the Talk-patch.
- Use the excellent patch (server and client) from 'U'.
- Use `Lockbanks'. By typing a special key you lock a certain
person.
- Use `LoadModifiers'. With one keystroke you get a certain predefined
set of modifers (to switch between smarts and mines, e.g.)
- Use the beep patch if you want to know about
new players entering.
